"Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed and in such desperate enterprises?  If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.  Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."

- Thoreau

Distant Drummer is a consultation service for executives looking to make a meaningful difference in the lives of their organizations--and in their own lives as leaders and as people.

It is for leaders of commercial, government, and not-for-profit enterprises who have experienced major achievements, but who want and need more, moving from a life of achievement to a wider and fuller level of contribution, impact, and service.

Service to their people, customers, communities--and to their businesses themselves--that is enduring and self-regenerating.

They have recognized from hard and sometimes painful experience that many of the most important problems and opportunities facing their organizations do not yield to simple formulas--be they old school or the flashy answers of the hour--or to strategies that do not really take into account deep human factors and true reflective thinking.

They know of course the value that mechanical programs and processes serve in the life of an enterprise, but also understand that, alone, these are not enough--and do not finally satisfy.  They sense another dimension is missing.

In a way, they have come full circle, rediscovering what they always knew was really needed for meaningful impact in business, but that got diluted, displaced, and diminished by the perennial haste to succeed and by the noise of those around them who chatter on about the crushing speed of change or who mistake passing fancies for genuine, creative innovation.

Now, in the distance, they hear the sound of a different drummer--a distant drummer they more than faintly recall--summoning them home to reclaim a path they inwardly know is the only real way forward, uncertain and not without risk as it may sometimes be.

A path of quiet depth, courage, principle, reflective thinking, and human heart--one that considers the other elements of organizational life from this higher ground and perspective.

At Distant Drummer, we are business leaders who have returned to this path ourselves, have mentored and guided others, and are continuing to explore, learn, and discover its joys and triumphs.

We welcome you to take a look inside--and consider joining with us on this journey.
